As part of its £2 billion disposal plan announced in August, Rolls-Royce has announced that it intends to dispose of Industria de Turbo Propulsores (ITP Aero) which has seen a continued negative impact on trading owing to the challenging civil aerospace market.
|
However, defense, which represents 25% of ITP Aero volumes, benefited from the Eurofighter order from the German Airforce for 56 EJ200 engines. The sale of the Spanish aero engine manufacturing subsidiary of Rolls-Royce is expected to take place in the first half of 2021. "The first half of next year we’ll see as engaging with the buyer universe around the ITP business," chief finance officer Stephen Daintith told reporters on December 11.

Established in 1989 as a joint venture between Spain’s SENER and Rolls-Royce, and at one point had grown to become the ninth-largest aircraft engine and components manufacturer in the world in terms of revenue. ITP Aero is involved in the design, research and development, manufacturing and casting, assembly, and testing of aeronautical engines, while also providing MRO services for a wide range of engines for regional airlines, business aviation, helicopters, industrial and defense applications. With a global network of production facilities in Spain, United Kingdom, Mexico, United States, Malta and India, ITP Aero's headquarters are located in Zamudio, near Bilbao, in Spain and has over 3,500 employees.

Supersonic aircraft company Aerion, has started development at Aerion Park – the company’s future state-of-the-art global headquarters that will home production of the AS2 business jet from 2023.
|
Aerion Park – which will represent a capital investment of more than US$300m in construction, machinery and equipment – will bring at least 675 new jobs in Florida by 2026 as the company ramps-up operations ahead of production of the AS2 private jet commencing in 2023. The company will be recruiting aircraft builders, designers, engineers, programmers and scientists while also expecting to enhance future employment in the wider mobility eco system.

Aerion Park will be located on more than 110 acres of the Orlando Melbourne International Airport (MLB) campus and among a growing cluster of aerospace and technology companies on Florida’s Space Coast. The Park will incorporate the company’s new global headquarters plus an integrated campus for research, design, production and interior completions of the company’s AS2 supersonic aircraft and future hypersonic aircraft.

Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE) has delivered the first of 18 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft to American Airlines as part of the purchase and leaseback agreement signed with American in the third quarter of this year. Delivery of the remaining aircraft is expected to be completed in the coming months.
|
Firoz Tarapore, Chief Executive Officer of DAE commented: "We are delighted to be in a position to offer a meaningful solution to American Airlines, a long-term customer of DAE, and to see the Boeing 737 MAX return to service."

Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) has appointed Peter Lienhard as its new Head of Information Technology. He will take up his new position, in which he will report directly to CFO Markus Binkert, on January 1, 2021.
|
Lienhard will also hold the function of Head of IT Domain Hub Airlines Commercial for the Lufthansa Group, reporting to the Group’s Head of Information Management Thomas Rückert. Lienhard succeeds Lukas Wirth, who will be leaving SWISS at the end of 2020 after seven years at the company to take on a new professional challenge outside the Lufthansa Group.

Eastern Airlines, based in Pennsylvania, U.S.A., has selected AMOS as its MRO software to support its fleet of twelve B767 and B777 aircraft. The AMOS Airline/MRO Edition will allow Eastern Airlines to take full advantage of the deep functionality of AMOS over the broad scope of maintenance processes that the company performs.

Eastern also opted for a fully AMOS cloud hosted model with AMOS running on a PostgreSQL database which falls in line with its corporate IT policy to keep internal IT effort to a minimum and increase cloud environments across all platforms.
|
The implementation project already started in July this year. Due to the highly demanding business sector that Eastern operates in, the project approach is designed to be lean and swift. Swiss-AS and Eastern are both working hard to manage through the current pandemic environment without having a significant negative impact on the project, while the focus is clearly on safety and efficiency. The detailed implementation project plan recognizes the reduced opportunity for travel with a focus on virtual training sessions and remote working by the whole implementation team.

British Airways has teamed up with ZeroAvia, a leading innovator in decarbonising commercial aviation, in a project to explore how hydrogen-powered aircraft can play a leading role in the future of sustainable flying.
|
The collaboration, which reflects the importance of sustainability at British Airways, will see ZeroAvia embedded in the heart of the airline. The team will work remotely alongside mentors and experts to explore the transformational possibilities of moving from fossil fuels to zero-emission hydrogen to power the airline’s future fleet.
|
In September 2020, ZeroAvia received global acclaim when it achieved a major technological breakthrough by completing the first hydrogen fuel cell powered flight of a commercial-size aircraft, which took off from Cranfield Airport. The Piper M-class six-seat plane completed taxi, take-off, a full pattern circuit, and landing.
|
The partnership forms part of IAG’s Hangar 51 accelerator program, which works with start-ups and scale-ups from around the world, providing them with an opportunity to develop and test their products on real world business challenges on a global scale. At the end of the program, research and learnings from the process will be shared and the ZeroAvia and Hangar 51 teams will consider how the partnership will progress longer-term.

Leonardo and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have signed a loan agreement of €200 million. The financing has the purpose of supporting the investment projects planned in the group’s industrial plan against the background of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This further loan by the EIB brings the investment support of the loan signed on November 29, 2018 from €300 to €500 million.

The investments pursued by Leonardo are very closely aligned with the EIB’s principles aimed at supporting development of cyber security products and solutions and advanced manufacturing as well as in innovative technologies that enable the decrease in emissions of pollutants through the product weight reduction and the improvement of fuel efficiency.
|
This is the third operation carried out between the EIB and Leonardo; the first of €500 million, in 2009, was aimed at developing technologically innovative aeronautical components; the second one of €300 million in 2018, to which is added this new contract, aimed at supporting investment projects in four main areas: development of highly innovative products in the helicopter division, cyber security, advanced manufacturing (Industry 4.0) and infrastructure projects needed to increase the production efficiency of the plants.

Air Saint-Pierre has taken delivery of its new ATR 42-600 aircraft, following the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding in July 2018.
|
Based on one of the three main islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon (around 6,300 inhabitants), Air Saint-Pierre is essential to the archipelago’s economy, as it flies both passengers and goods to Miquelon, St. John’s, the Magdalen Islands, Halifax and Montreal. The new aircraft will replace the airline’s existing ATR 42-500 which has been in operation since 2009.
