Regional carrier Loganair, operator of the world’s shortest commercial route, to be sold

The UK’s regional carrier Loganair, based in Paisley, Scotland, is to be sold. During a difficult period for the airline industry, the company has been quick to point out that the sale has come about solely for personal reasons of the owners, Stephen and Peter Bond, and not for fiscal reasons.

Loganair is currently “performing strongly” and is continuing with its fleet renewal strategy, enabling it to continue to perform strongly as the UK’s leading regional carrier. Loganair CEO Jonathan Hinkles has confirmed that shareholders Stephen and Peter Bond are working to find a “new custodian” for the airline. Hinkles stated: “We shared the news yesterday with our whole team that, after 25 years of involvement in Loganair including the last ten years as sole owners, our shareholders Stephen and Peter Bond are working to find a new custodian for Scotland’s Airline. It’s for the best of reasons – Stephen is now 72 years of age and wishes to step back from day-to-day business. That’s really the beginning, middle and end of the story right there.”

Loganair has a staff of approximately 840 people and though well known throughout the UK, the carrier also has worldwide recognition as the operator of the world’s shortest commercial flight. The journey between the two Orkney islands of Westray and Papa Westray, located some 180 miles to the north of mainland Scotland, is 1.7 miles in length and takes 80 seconds to complete.

Turkish Airlines signs Global SAF Declaration

Turkish Airlines continues its support for the development of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) which play a key role in reducing carbon emissions. Starting to actively use SAF during its operations as of 2022, Turkish Airlines emphasised the importance of the matter for the company by signing a Global SAF Declaration.

The Global SAF Declaration represents a collaboration between aviation, aerospace and fuel partners to decarbonise sustainable aviation fuel. The aim of the declaration is to completely decarbonise sustainable aviation fuels.

Turkish Airlines plans to increase SAF usage to the highest levels in line with the technical, regulatory, safety and financial feasibility.

Starting to use sustainable aviation fuel for the first time in 2022 on the Istanbul Airport – Paris Charles De Gaulle route, Turkish Airlines extended this usage to its Paris, Oslo, Gothenburg, Copenhagen, London and Stockholm for one day of every week. Global airlines intend to increase the frequencies and destinations served with sustainable aviation fuel in the future. Also, sustainable aviation fuel records up to 87% less greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional kerosene fuel.

Daniel Bärlocher to leave Swiss International Airlines

After more than 11 years in the function as Head of Corporate Communications of Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS), Daniel Bärlocher is to leave the company to take a new path outside the airline sector.

Among his numerous achievements during his SWISS tenure, Bärlocher has realigned the company’s Corporate Communications unit and adopted a newsroom approach to its communications planning and steering. Through various creative public relations events to strengthen its Swissness and its premium positioning, he has also helped generate sizeable and widespread positive reporting on SWISS that extends well beyond Switzerland’s borders.

Bärlocher played a particularly vital role in the orchestration of SWISS’s restructuring and transformation in response to the COVID pandemic. Digitalisation has also been driven strongly under his leadership, in both SWISS’s internal communications channels and on the corporate publishing front, where the two previous print inflight magazines have been transformed into an attractive digital platform that will shortly be launched.

Gloria Aviation takes delivery of first Light Civil Helicopter

Airbus Helicopters and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) have delivered the first Light Civil Helicopter (LCH) to a local operator, Gloria Aviation, following certification in September this year. Entering service in an emergency medical services configuration in December, this helicopter will be deployed to support critical life-saving missions in Jeju.

This key milestone came on the back of a successful industrial partnership which started in 2015 when the two companies jointly collaborated on the LCH and Light Armed Helicopter (LAH) development programmes.

The LCH completed prototype flights at the end of 2019. Other than its first application for emergency medical services, the helicopter will also be deployed for public service missions such as search and rescue, utility, law enforcement and fire fighting.

The LAH prototype completed its maiden flight in July 2019, with the aircraft to be qualified in the coming weeks. This successful qualification will pave the way for serial production of the helicopter, which Airbus and KAI will jointly embark on by the end of 2022, for the Republic of Korea Army.
