Ampaire’s Eco Caravan completes successful maiden flight

Los Angeles-based Ampaire has announced the successful maiden flight of its eight-seater Eco Caravan, the first in a series of hybrid electric aircraft planned by the company to help carriers transition to sustainable aviation.

The 33-minute flight of a converted Cessna Grand Caravan took place at Camarillo Airport in California, reaching an altitude of 3,500 feet. Currently the Eco Caravan can reduce fuel consumption and emissions by up to 70% and will improve on this figure when using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The Eco Caravan is an upgrade of Cessna’s Grand Caravan and as the battery pack is located in a body fairing there is no reduction in passenger capacity and payload capability. In addition, the plane will have a range of over 1,000 miles, which exceeds the range of other proposed all-electric, hydrogen-electric and even other hybrid-electric designs.

Ampaire is hoping to obtain supplemental type certification (STC) for the Eco Caravan by 2024, the process being appreciably simpler and quicker than normal as the aircraft does not need to go through a full aircraft certification programme. Once operational, Ampaire will look to scale-up the hybrid propulsion system, with a goal to see it operating within single-aisle airliners.

The Eco Caravan can recharge its batteries in flight or at a charging station, on the ground. However, as charging infrastructure will be limited for some years, the ability to operate independent of ground charging is crucial for preserving the full utility of the Eco Caravan. At MRO Europe in October, Ampaire announced a relationship with Air France Industries KLM Engineering and Maintenance (AFI KLM E&M) for a range of worldwide maintenance service and support activities. Additionally last month, Ampaire confirmed it has received an order from MONTE, a financier of sustainable regional aviation technologies, for up to 50 Eco Caravans.

French air navigation service provider to deploy SITA’s Safety Cube solution for enhanced safety

French air navigation service provider, DSNA, has selected SITA’s safety and compliance management solution, SITA Safety Cube, to advance operational safety and promote a strong safety culture. The system will be deployed in French airspace spanning five air route traffic control centres, 70 airports in mainland France and six overseas airports.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), responsible for setting standards concerning air transport, has stipulated that service providers must implement ‘safety management systems’ to manage safety proactively. Using SITA Safety Cube, DSNA aims to raise its safety management standards further.

SITA Safety Cube supports proactive safety management, which focuses on identifying and mitigating potential safety concerns before accidents or incidents happen compared to a more traditional, reactive approach when or after an incident occurs. Moreover, the solution uniquely empowers service providers to monitor the effectiveness of their risk controls by connecting operational safety data with safety risk analysis. It also enables more objective and reliable data-driven safety management decisions.

DSNA manages one of the largest and busiest airspaces in Europe – before the pandemic in 2019, the French air navigation service provider (ANSP) controlled over 3.2 million flights. In June of this year, air traffic in France reached 82.5% of pre-pandemic levels, and if this trend continues, this will equate to over 2.7 million flights by the end of 2022. With increasing airspace congestion, safety is a key strategic driver for DSNA's airspace and air traffic management modernization.

Singapore Airlines to increase Airbus A380 services to Australia

Singapore Airlines (SIA) will boost frequencies to destinations across East Asia and Southeast Asia, resume flights to Busan and increase Airbus A380 services to Australia during the Northern Summer operating season (March 26, to October 29, 2023), supporting the strong projected demand to these destinations.

As a result, SIA’s flight frequencies will reach or exceed pre-pandemic levels in multiple destinations across East Asia and Southeast Asia by March 2024. These include Bangkok in Thailand; Busan and Seoul in South Korea; Fukuoka, Nagoya, and Osaka in Japan; Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam; Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia; Siem Reap in Cambodia; and Taipei in Taiwan, China.

In addition, in Australia, Melbourne will get a new daily A380 service and Sydney will get a second daily A380 service.

JoAnn Tan, Senior Vice President Marketing Planning, Singapore Airlines, said: “Looking ahead to 2023, we see stronger demand for flights to destinations across Southeast Asia, parts of East Asia and Australia. As we restore our network to these regions closer to pre-pandemic levels, our customers have even more flight options as they make their holiday plans.”

Multi-Billion dollar O’Hare Airport terminal construction gets green light from FAA

Construction can start on new passenger terminals at O’Hare International Airport U.S.A., after the Federal Aviation Administration completed the project’s environmental review.

“Chicago’s transportation infrastructure is what makes this city an economic powerhouse of global importance,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “Now, as we prepare to break ground on O’Hare’s newest terminal, Chicago and this entire region will be positioned to grow and create good-paying jobs through the benefits of first-rate infrastructure, beginning with the construction project itself.”

The review analysed Chicago Department of Aviation projects including new terminals, on-airport hotels, airfield and taxiway improvements and support facilities. It also reviewed the FAA’s proposal to make permanent angled approaches to Runway 10R/28L to allow simultaneous arrival to multiple runways. The FAA concluded that proposed construction projects and changes to air traffic procedures will not significantly affect any environmental resources, including noise, air quality, water resources, and historic sites.

President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has made more than US$73 million available to O’Hare and more than US$20 million to Midway International Airport in the first year. The law created three programmes, investing US$25 billion total over five years into the U.S. aviation system.

GKN Aerospace to create additive manufacturing centre of excellence in Texas

GKN Aerospace will relocate its North America additive manufacturing (AM) centre of excellence to the Lone Star Commerce Centre in Fort Worth, Texas. The move will strengthen its position as an additive technology leader with a larger facility, plans for an additional larger AM cell and increased collaboration within the aerospace ecosystem.

The 100,000 ft² facility will initially house research and development of laser metal deposition with wire (LMD-w) additive manufacturing technology for large-scale titanium aero structures. Early in 2023, GKN Aerospace will transfer existing equipment and personnel from Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility in Tennessee to the new site in Texas. Over the next few years, GKN Aerospace expects to transform the facility into its fourth Global Technology Centre to complement existing centres in Sweden, the Netherlands and the UK.

Shawn Black, GKN Aerospace’s President of Defense said: “We are very excited to bring our additive technology research to Fort Worth. With proximity to many of our major customers in Texas and across the US, this is the right place for GKN Aerospace. Along with partnership with local government, we look forward to expanding our titanium additive manufacturing capabilities and pushing the boundaries of this technology for our customers and the aerospace industry.”

GKN Aerospace will renovate the facility with office space and equipment over the next two years, while the City of Fort Worth will provide grant funding based on qualified R&D investment. When at full capacity, the centre will support up to 100 personnel.
