easyJet has received permission from the European Commission to use the 18 slots at Lisbon Airport that had been relinquished by flag carrying TAP. TAP was forced to release the slots in return for financial aid to help it during the COVID-19 pandemic.
|
Back in February this year Michael O’Leary, CEO of Ryanair and Europe’s largest low-cost carrier and the number two operator at Lisbon wrote to the Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa to release TAP's unused slots by March 4, citing Ryanair’s significant investment in Lisbon and the Portuguese economy. O’Leary also threatened to reduce the carrier’s service out of Lisbon if the slots were not made available by the summer, warning that the relocation of aircraft could result in the loss of 150 staff and one million passengers at Lisbon Airport.

However, when the slots were put up for tender, it was easyJet who was the successful bidder, allowing it to leapfrog Ryanair to now become the second-largest operator out of Lisbon, ahead of Ryanair. Compared to pre-pandemic levels easyJet has grown by 18% in Portugal: 14% in Lisbon, 50% in Oporto, and 63% in Funchal and in addition the low-cost carrier opened its latest Portuguese base in Faro in 2021.

Jose Lopes, country manager Portugal, easyJet, commented: “We are really pleased with the European Commission’s decision to assign 18 new slots at Lisbon airport to easyJet. This will enable us to keep growing significantly in one of our most important markets.” The slots will become available for use at the end of October 2022 and as part of the tender bid, easyJet had to commit the required number of aircraft to use the slots until the end of 2025.

Jordan has officially signed a letter of offer and acceptance to buy eight new production F-16 Block 70 aircraft.
|
The selection of new production F-16 aircraft extends Jordan’s existing fleet of F-16s, bringing advanced capabilities to the mission combined with affordable operating and lifecycle costs.
|
Jordan’s new F-16s will be built in Greenville, South Carolina, where Lockheed Martin continues to hire for positions that work directly on building and sustaining these jets.

Boeing has unveiled its 2022 ecoDemonstrator with a livery that honors a decade of testing to reduce fuel use, emissions and noise. The latest ecoDemonstrator, a Boeing-owned 777-200ER, will test about 30 new technologies aimed at improving sustainability and safety for the aerospace industry, including a water conservation system and technologies to improve operational efficiency.

"The ecoDemonstrator programme's rigorous testing of new technologies further enhances the environmental performance of our products and services and is invaluable to continuously improving safety."

Since its initial flights in 2012, the Boeing ecoDemonstrator programme has accelerated innovation by taking new technologies out of the lab and testing them in an operational environment. Including this year's platform, the programme has tested about 230 technologies to help decarbonise aviation, improve operational efficiency and enhance safety and the passenger experience. Approximately a third of tested technologies have progressed onto Boeing's products and services.

LCI, a leading aviation company and a subsidiary of the Libra Group and Sumitomo Mitsui Finance and Leasing Company, Limited (SMFL), have delivered two new Leonardo AW169 helicopters from its joint venture leasing operation to the well-established Italian helicopter operator, Alidaunia.

The two state-of-the-art aircraft will be based in Naples and Salerno on long-term operating leases, from where Alidaunia will use them to deliver mission-critical and socially responsible Emergency Medical Services (EMS) operations for the Campania region of Italy.

LCI and SMFL’s joint venture portfolio now totals 38 units valued at over US$420 million - a doubling in size in less than two years from when the JV was launched in September 2020 with 19 aircraft.

Elix Aviation, the international regional aircraft leasing company, has confirmed the delivery of one new ATR 72-600 aircraft, MSN 1646, under a sale and leaseback transaction with Afrijet. With this new delivery, Elix Aviation continues
to grow its ATR portfolio and increase its leasing and asset management services in the African market.

Founded in 2005 in Libreville, Afrijet is a Gabonese airline, which became the first airline in the CEMAC zone in 2019. Established as a historical charter player, Afrijet has developed a regional scheduled network since October 2016. IOSA certified for a second consecutive time in June 2022, Afrijet employs 250 people in Gabon, Congo, Cameroon, Chad, Equatorial Guinea and Benin. Operating until then a fleet of six turboprops from European manufacturer ATR, the airline is taking delivery of its first new ATR with the finance support of Elix Aviation, the first of a series of new aircraft.
