Airbus has announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ecocopter to expand urban air mobility (UAM) services in a number of Latin American countries with the intent to create a fully functioning UAM ecosystem in the region. Initially the partnership will involve the exploration and definition of launch scenarios for air mobility operations, predominantly in Peru, Ecuador and Chile. This will include joint activities to develop UAM operations over the continent, as well as ways to target first-use cases, pilot cities and regions.

Ecocopter has been connected to Airbus many years and currently operates a fleet of 16 H125, two H135 and three H145 Airbus helicopters, is characterised by their high versatility and perform missions ranging from offshore transport, mining support, medical evacuation, firefighting, and almost the entire range of aerial work missions.

Back in September last year, Airbus revealed its eVTOL prototype CityAirbus NextGen, to explore advanced air mobility technologies and bring urban air mobility services to life. With an operational range of 80 km and a cruise speed of 120 km/h, the aircraft has been developed for deployment in urban areas and beyond. Airbus is also working closely with industrial and institutional partners to lead the development of urban air mobility ecosystems, as recently announced with ITA Airways in Italy, or through the launch of the Air Mobility Initiative in Germany.

Spirit AeroSystems has announced at MRO Asia-Pacific in Singapore the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB) to develop maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services for the Boeing 737 next-generation aircraft.
|
Under the terms of the agreement, Spirit and MAB will start to jointly work on establishing repair services for nacelle and flight control surfaces to support the airline’s fleet and the planes of other operators before the end of 2022.
|
“This is an important development as Spirit Aftermarket Services continues to expand service offerings to the important Asia-Pacific market,” said Kailash Krishnaswamy, Senior Vice President of Aftermarket Services for Spirit.
|
Krishnaswamy said Spirit’s Aftermarket business continues to grow since the 2021 acquisition of select Bombardier maintenance, repair and overhaul operations in Belfast, Northern Ireland and Casablanca, Morocco; the acquisition of assets from Applied Aerodynamics in Dallas, Texas, USA; and the SEAS joint venture. Spirit’s Aftermarket business revenues have grown from US$186 million in 2019 to US$239.9 million in 2021. Spirit is targeting to grow the aftermarket business to US$500 million in revenue by 2025.

The Pearl 700, the exclusive engine for the brand-new Gulfstream Aerospace flagship business jet aircraft Gulfstream G700 and Gulfstream G800, has received official certification by the European Union’s Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The pioneering engine, which was developed at the Rolls Royce Centre of Excellence for Business Aviation engines in Dahlewitz, Germany, was custom-designed to power two of Gulfstream’s latest products, enabling them to fly ultra-long-range missions nearly as fast as the speed of sound.

During the comprehensive test programme, the engine demonstrated exceptional performance operating at sea-level and altitude conditions on both conventional jet fuel and 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). It proved its ability to withstand bird-strike, ice, hail and water ingestion as well as passing the critical fan blade containment test, during which a fan blade is deliberately released at maximum speed.

Testing was conducted at various Rolls-Royce locations in Europe and North America, including Dahlewitz in Germany, Bristol in the UK, Manitoba and Montreal, Canada, the Rolls Royce outdoor jet engine testing facility, located at NASA’s John C Stennis Space Centre, Mississippi, U.S.A., as well as the altitude test bed at AEDC (Arnold Engineering Development Center) in Tullahoma, Tennessee, U.S.A.

GA Telesis Engine Services (GATES) and Lion Air have entered into a long-term engine maintenance contract covering the airline’s Boeing 737NG fleet.
|
This strategic win for GATES covers maintenance, repair, and overhaul of CFM56-7B engines across Lion Air Group airlines (including Batik Malaysia and Thai Lion Air). In addition, it includes leased engine support, LLP management, and logistics. The first engine maintenance event will enter a GATES maintenance slot in early October 2022.

Lion Air, the largest airline in Indonesia and second-largest low-cost airline in Southeast Asia, now has a large majority of the domestic market share post-pandemic and continues to add capacity to meet increased passenger travel.

Aviation market intelligence and consultancy company IBA has published its monthly Aviation Industry Barometer for August 2022, showing that commercial aircraft deliveries increased by 28% between August 2021 and August 2022. This was boosted by Boeing resuming deliveries of the 787 following production issues.
|
Intelligence from IBA Insight reveals that the recovery in monthly global passenger flights was stable in August 2022, with flight capacity at 83% relative to pre-pandemic levels.
|
IBA’s Aviation Industry Barometer for August 2022 also indicates that:
|
- There were approximately 2.64 million commercial passenger flights in August 2022, the same level seen in July 2022, and 28% more than the 2.06 million flights were recorded in August 2021.
- There were 78 commercial aircraft deliveries in August 2022, representing a month-on-month decrease of 6% compared to July 2022, but a year-on-year gain of 28% compared to August 2021.
- After more than a year’s pause due to production issues, Boeing resumed deliveries of the 787, with four deliveries in August to a mixture of operators.
- Freighter deliveries remained exclusive to Boeing, with five aircraft delivered in August – three 777Fs and two 767-300Fs, the majority of which were to Federal Express.
- Asia Pacific flight capacity continues to lag behind, although the region is starting to show signs of recovery with +56% year-on-year growth as restrictions relax further.
- Latin America is leading the global recovery, with flight capacity at 100% or more of pre-pandemic levels since May this year, while global capacity remained at 83% in August.

Embraer has signed an investment agreement to acquire a minority shareholding in XMobots, the largest drone company in Latin America with operations in São Carlos, in the countryside of São Paulo. The transaction will be made via an investment fund in which Embraer is the sole partner, with an additional investment option in the future. The conclusion is subject to accomplishment conditions and obtaining the usual approvals for this type of transaction.

Canada Jetlines, the new, all-Canadian, leisure airline, has signed a worldwide distribution agreement with Sabre, the leading software and technology company that powers the global travel industry.
|
This new long-term agreement ensures that Sabre will distribute the carrier’s comprehensive content for travel agencies and corporations through the Sabre travel marketplace (GDS), supporting Canada Jetlines in powering future revenue growth while reaching key market segments associated with the GDS.

Canada Jetlines will leverage Sabre’s ancillary services to provide travel agencies around the world with access to the airline’s complete range of travel products, including fares and seat availability.
|
The Sabre travel marketplace is instrumental in facilitating the marketing, sale and servicing of airfares, hotel rooms, rental cars, rail tickets and other types of travel to buyers around the world who use it to shop, book and manage travel.

Canada Jetlines will begin operations out of its travel hub at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), with its first scheduled route into YYC Calgary International Airport on September 22, 2022.
