Air France KLM loss widens in first quarter 2019

In the first quarter 2019, the Air France-KLM Group posted an operating result of -303 million, down €185 million compared to last year, which was impacted by the Air France strike for €-75 million. The unit revenue at constant currency of -2.2% compared to last year had a negative impact of €115 million on the operating result. The fuel bill including hedging amounted to €1,201 million for first quarter 2019, up €140 million, of which €44 million is explained by an increase in the fuel price and a volume effect of €34 million for the capacity increase compared to last year. The result of the fuel hedges has been a gain of €35 million. Currencies had a positive €65 million impact on revenues and a negative e108 million on costs including currency hedging. The net impact of currencies thus amounted to a negative €43 million for first quarter 2019.

On a constant currency and fuel price basis, unit costs were down -0.4% in the first quarter 2019, driven in particular by the decrease in customer compensations compared to first quarter 2018 that was marked by the strikes in Air France However this was partly offset by KLM unit cost which were impacted by a 1.3% lower than planned capacity due to weather and technical reasons.

The Group generated positive adjusted operating free cash flow of €241 million, an increase of €99 million compared to last year, mainly explained by a lower capex in the first quarter 2019 due to a year-over-year shift in investment timing pattern.

7-day strike over as SAS reaches deal with pilots’ union

After the cancelation of over 4,000 flights affecting more than 380,000 passengers, Scandinavian airline SAS has reached an agreement with the pilots’ union which sees the 7-day strike come to an end, thought continued disruption of flights as a consequence of strike was expected.

More than 1,400 pilots in Denmark, Norway and Sweden went on strike after the main pilots' union failed to reach a collective bargaining agreement with the company. One of the principal points of negotiation was scheduling, which at times would see pilots working seven days in a row, while
a 13 percent pay increase was being sought in comparison to 2.3 percent offered by SAS. It is understood that agreement was reached whereby pilots’ salary would be increased by 3.5 percent for 2019, while greater job security and more predictable work schedules were also offered.

SAS CEO Rickard Gustafson told media in Stockholm that: "I'm relieved to inform our customers and employees that we can now put this conflict behind us," adding that "Of course this has cost us both money and trust," when referring to the economic impact the strike had had on the airline. Estimates put the cost of the strike at between 60 and 80 million krona (US$6 and US$8 million) per day. While the share value of SAS has fallen consistently since February, reducing in value by nearly one third by the end of the strike, the announcement of the successful negotiations saw that value increase by nine percent the day after.

Embraer has delivered a total of 22 jets in the first quarter of 2019 (1Q19), of which 11 were commercial aircraft and 11 were executive jets (8 light and 3 large). As of March 31st, the firm order backlog totaled US$16.0 billion.

Embraer also signed a firm order for 10 E195-E2 jets with Nigeria’s largest airline, Air Peace, which will become the first E-Jets E2 operator in Africa. The contract includes purchase rights for a further 20 E195-E2. With all purchase rights being exercised, the contract has a value of US$2.12 billion based on current list prices. Fiji Airways opts for the A350 XWB as part of its expansion plans

Fiji Airways has adopted the A350 XWB as part of its expansion plans to broaden its international network. Two A350-900s will be leased from Dubai-based DAE Capital, making Fiji Airways the newest operator and DAE Capital the latest customer.

With its common type rating with the A330 Family, the A350 XWB was the natural aircraft choice to seamlessly join the airline’s existing fleet of four A330s. The common rating between the A350 XWB and A330 means that pilots who are qualified and current on the A330 can already commence preparations to take the A350 XWB’s controls by undergoing “differences training” only, meaning a significant cost savings and operational flexibility.

The aircraft will be configured with 33 full lie-flat Business Class and 301 Economy Class seats. The aircraft will be deployed to enhance existing long-haul services between Fiji, Australia and the U.S., and to provide the opportunity to open additional routes.

The fully composite seatback curve provides unparalleled levels of living space at the passenger’s knee level and enhances passenger comfort. Acro has been working closely with Etihad to develop a customised version of Series 6 that includes a PED holder, upper and lower literature pockets, fast charging USB provisioning, headrest, bespoke fabric seat covers and backrest cushions.
