Boeing set to talk to approved Iranian airlines

With economic sanctions having been lifted, Iran has become a prime target for aircraft manufacturers who have identified that the country has an ageing fleet of aircraft. Based on Airglobal figures, it is understood that the current Iranian fleet consists of 94 Boeing and McDonnell Douglas aircraft and 96 Airbus planes. A good number of the Boeing planes date back to the late 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, including 11 747s.
Airbus have already been in discussion with Iranian carriers and have agreed sales of 118 jets at a list price value of US$27 billion, this deal including 12 A380s. As a result of receiving a license from the US government this Thursday, Boeing are now set to enter into negotiations with Iranian carriers. According to Boeing, “We have applied for and received a license to assess the current commercial passenger airplane needs of US government-approved Iranian airlines. The license permits us to engage approved airlines to determine their actual fleet requirements.” The current license however only allows for discussions regarding potential sales to take place, an additional license would be required before any purchase agreements could be signed.
Boeing went on to say that: “Our European competitor, Airbus, is advancing its interests in the market, and Canada recently indicated that it will permit Bombardier access to the Iranian market as well.” However, the aircraft manufacturer may face an uphill struggle as the political history of Iran is such that it may be difficult to find financial institutions willing to handle the transactions. Additionally, total transparency will be required to ensure that there is no connection between purchasing carriers and their additional dealings in such areas as arms, etc. which would be unacceptable to US policies.
Boeing have made it clear that: “We understand that the situation in the region is complicated and ever changing and we will continue to follow the US government’s guidance as it relates to conducting business with Iran.”
