The sixth Singapore Airshow will start on Tuesday, February 6 and will run until Sunday, February 11. Originally called the Changi Airshow, the bi-annual Singapore Airshow is now held adjacent to Singapore’s Changi International Airport, at the Changi Exhibition Center which offers approximately 42,500 square meters of indoors space and over 100,000 square meters of external exhibition area. More than 80,000 visitors are expected to attend over the six-day period.
Singapore Airshow is Asia’s largest and one of the most important aerospace and defense events, ranking in size only behind Le Bourget in France and Farnborough in the U.K., while ranking alongside the Dubai Airshow. In 2016 the show had over 1,000 companies and 48,000 trade visitors from 143 countries participating.
One of the key events will be the high-level Singapore Airshow Aviation Leadership Summit (SAALS) to engage key industry stakeholders and government officials in an exchange of ideas to advance the strategic interests of the aviation sector.
A backdrop to the show will be China’s push into the commercial aviation market with its COMAC narrow-body C919, though it will not be the only country looking to carve out space in the tightly controlled commercial market. Russia’s Irkut MC-21 and Japan’s Mitsubishi Regional Jet are looking to become serious contenders and will be represented at the airshow along with their Chinese rival.
Planemakers including Airbus and Boeing will also show off their latest and best aircraft. As for the importance of the Singapore Airshow, according to estimates by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Asia Pacific is likely to have 3.5 billion passengers by 2036, adding more than double the forecast for North America and Europe combined.
Confirmation of a number of valuable orders is expected across the board. In the 2014 Singapore Airshow, 20 deals worth US$30.8 billion (Disclosed) + 24 deals (Undisclosed value) were sealed, while in 2016 11 deals worth US$13.6 billion (Disclosed) + 41 deals (Undisclosed value) were sealed.
