Japan Airlines has appointed Mitsuko Tottori, the Senior Managing Executive Officer, to take on the role of the company’s president starting April 1, 2024. According to the Japan Times, Tottori, who initially joined JAL in 1985 as a cabin attendant and later became the second woman to serve as a representative director at the airline, is set to become the airline’s first female president.
This leadership reshuffle aligns with Japan Airlines’ efforts to bounce back from the pandemic-induced economic challenges and the resurgence of tourism in Japan. The current President, Yuji Akasaka, will transition to the position of chairperson while retaining his title as a Representative Director, as per the statement from Japan Airlines.
JAL Group has set a target of achieving 30% female representation among its managers by the end of the fiscal year in March 2026, highlighting the company’s commitment to gender diversity.
