Inter Terminals Sweden is teaming up with SAS to enhance its aviation fuel capabilities in the Port of Gävle. The project involves repurposing tanks from traditional fossil heating oil storage to create a blending and storage facility for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This expansion aligns with SAS's ambitious environmental objectives to fuel SAF equivalent to its consumption in Scandinavia by 2030.
SAS aims to significantly boost its use of sustainable aviation fuel each year to meet its 2030 target. This joint investment with Inter Terminals Sweden will play a crucial role in achieving this objective, with the new facility expected to commence operations in summer 2024.
Ann-Sofie Hörlin, SAS's Head of Sustainability, emphasised the importance of such collaborations in driving sustainability across the aviation industry. She highlights the necessity for proactive investments throughout the value chain to support the transition to more eco-friendly flights.
Johan Zettergren, Managing Director of Inter Terminals Sweden, underscores the strategic positioning of the Port of Gävle and its logistics infrastructure, which are vital for advancing the aviation sector's goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. He expresses enthusiasm for the partnership with SAS in implementing this project.
Fredrik Svanbom, CEO of the Port of Gävle, applauds the initiative, noting its alignment with the port's strategy to facilitate a green transition and sustainable energy and logistics systems. The expansion will further enhance Gävle's capacity for handling SAF, contributing positively to the region's sustainable development goals.
