Defence and security company Saab has been awarded a contract by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the acquisition of additional LITENING 5 target designator pods, along with maintenance capabilities. The order, valued at SEK 390 million (£29 million), underscores Saab’s continued partnership with FMV in enhancing Sweden’s defence capabilities.
The LITENING 5 pod plays a crucial role in precision target designation through laser targeting and tracking. FMV had previously procured this version of the LDP (laser designation pod) for Gripen E, and it is now also integrated into Gripen C/D aircraft. This latest order includes the procurement of additional pods, maintenance services, and spare parts.
Lars Tossman, Head of Saab’s Aeronautics business area, emphasised the significance of building a maintenance capability for this version of the target designation pod, stating, “By establishing maintenance capabilities for this version of the target designation pod, Saab is ensuring that the Swedish Armed Forces can sustain them within Sweden’s borders.”
The delivery of the pods and maintenance capabilities to FMV is scheduled for 2026.
