The development of the new Do228 NXT by the German aircraft manufacturer General Atomics AeroTec Systems (GA-ATS) is making excellent progress. The latest batch builds upon the foundation of the existing Dornier 228 (Do228), featuring a glass cockpit and undergoing further optimisation and upgrades.
A significant milestone has been reached with the successful commencement of wing production for the Do228 NXT – a pivotal moment for the company. Following the initiation of fuselage production with manufacturer Potez Aéronautique in France, GA-ATS in Oberpfaffenhofen is also making significant strides in internally producing complex components.
The Do228 NXT development team has accomplished the milling and measurement of the first prototype wing panel with great success. Subsequently, production of the initial series panel has commenced following satisfactory results from the prototype phase. Critical raw materials and system components required for final assembly have already been secured.
For the company, it is not only about developing and establishing a European supply chain but also about expanding production and final assembly capabilities internally. In the case of the Do228 NXT, production of the control surfaces, as well as the final assembly of the wing itself and ultimately the entire aircraft, will occur at the company’s facilities in Oberpfaffenhofen. The emphasis lies on establishing a robust supply chain primarily centred on German and European suppliers, reaffirming the quality standards of GA-ATS.
Planning for wing assembly has been finalised, with preparations reaching its concluding stages. The necessary tools and equipment have been calibrated, set up and are now ready to commence assembly of the first panels.
“The start of production of the wing for the new Do228 NXT marks an important milestone for General Atomics AeroTec Systems,” said Erik Bollen, Managing Director of General Atomics AeroTec Systems. “Our dedicated team has worked hard to achieve this. We look forward to manufacturing the next-generation of the Do228 here in Oberpfaffenhofen and providing our customers with a modern and versatile aircraft.”
The Do228 NXT represents GA-ATS’s development of the next-generation of the renowned Do228. The aircraft enjoys worldwide popularity for its versatility in passenger transportation, cargo transport and special mission flights. Additionally, the Do228 possesses unique flight characteristics, including short take-off and landing (STOL) capabilities. The Do228 NXT represents a modernised version of the aircraft, blending established and proven elements with the latest technology.
