Virgin Atlantic has placed a firm order for seven additional A330neo aircraft as part of its broader fleet transformation initiative. This new agreement increases Virgin Atlantic’s total commitment to the A330neo to 19 aircraft, enhancing its operational economics.
The announcement was made during the Farnborough Airshow aboard Virgin Atlantic’s A330neo, named ‘Ruby Rebel’ and registered as GB-VSRB in honour of founder Sir Richard Branson, marking the airline’s 40th anniversary.
Shai Weiss, CEO of Virgin Atlantic, said, “Today, we complete our multi-billion-pound fleet transformation with the acquisition of seven more A330-900s, which we know our customers and crew love to fly. Operating the youngest fleet is a crucial step toward decarbonising long-haul aviation, and we are proud to already have one of the youngest, most fuel-efficient, and carbon-conscious fleets across the Atlantic.”
He added, “Our special partnership with Airbus began with the arrival of ‘Lady in Red’ in 1993, and our latest addition, ‘Ruby Rebel,’ celebrates our 40th birthday this year. Virgin Atlantic has flown more than 60 Airbus aircraft in the last three decades. While we may not have been the first to join, Airbus has been our principal partner, making our customers smile throughout.”
The A330neo features the award-winning Airspace cabin, offering passengers a distinctive experience with high comfort levels, enhanced ambience and innovative design. This includes increased individual space, larger overhead bins, a new lighting system and access to the latest in-flight entertainment and connectivity options.
Powered by the latest Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, the A330-900 can fly 7,200 nautical miles (13,300 km) non-stop. As of the end of June 2024, the A330 Family had accumulated 1,798 firm orders from over 130 customers worldwide, including 319 A330neo aircraft from 30 customers.
