IBA’s latest Aviation Industry Barometer revealed that international flight volumes have grown dramatically by 12.5% year-on-year, while domestic travel showed more modest growth at 4.5% year-on-year.
IBA’s leading aviation intelligence platform, IBA Insight, further indicated that in the second quarter of 2024, there were approximately 8.89 million commercial passenger flights, marking a year-on-year increase of 7.2% compared to Q2-2023.
Monthly global passenger capacity recovery remained above pre-pandemic ASKs throughout Q2-2024, with June 2024 ASKs at 105% compared to 2019 levels. During June 2024, operator capacity in Europe and the APAC region was broadly at 2019 levels. ASKs from North America and the Middle East were trending between 105%-110% of 2019 levels, while capacity from Latin America and Africa reached 115%-120% of 2019 levels.
Commercial aircraft deliveries continued to fall, with 304 commercial aircraft deliveries across Q2-2024, representing a variance of -16% and -31% compared to Q2-2023 and Q2-2018, respectively. In the first half of 2024, Airbus A320neo deliveries averaged 45 per month, compared to Boeing’s 737 MAX at 22 per month.
Passenger ASKs from Chinese operators were trending 6% above 2019 levels during Q2-2024. Additionally, 1.35 million commercial passenger flights were recorded by Chinese operators in Q2-2024, compared to 1.18 million in Q2-2023 and 1.19 million in Q2-2019.
