SMBC Aviation Capital, a prominent global aircraft leasing company, has finalised lease agreements with United Airlines (United) for 20 Airbus A321neo aircraft. These aircraft, part of United's previously announced fleet expansion in April, will be delivered starting in 2026 and will come directly from SMBC Aviation Capital's Airbus orderbook.
This agreement follows a recently completed sale and leaseback transaction involving 20 Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft between the two companies.
United Airlines' Chief Financial Officer, Michael Leskinen, emphasised that the relationship between SMBC Aviation Capital and United Airlines has reached new heights, with these leases playing a crucial role in optimising the airline's balance sheet and enhancing returns on capital. He expressed gratitude for SMBC's continued support and partnership.
Barry Flannery, SMBC Aviation Capital's Chief Commercial Officer, noted that the more fuel-efficient A321neo aircraft will enable United Airlines to expand its fleet further, aligning with the airline's growth strategy. He underscored the significance of the long-standing partnership between SMBC and United and expressed optimism for future collaborations.
