Alaska Airlines has announced the appointment of John Wiitala as its new Vice President of Maintenance and Engineering. In this key leadership position, Wiitala will oversee teams across the division, ensuring the highest standards of safety and compliance for Alaska's fleet of over 237 mainline Boeing aircraft operating across multiple maintenance bases.
Wiitala brings extensive experience to the role, joining Alaska Airlines after a distinguished 34-year tenure with United Airlines. Most recently, he served as Vice President and Chief Engineer of Tech Operations, Safety and Compliance, where he oversaw United's entire fleet. Prior to that, he was Vice President of Technical Services and held various other senior engineering roles, including director of engineering and managing director of project engineering, since joining United in 1992.
At Alaska Airlines, Wiitala's responsibilities will span a broad scope, including line maintenance operations, airframe, component and engine maintenance, stores and distribution, quality assurance, maintenance planning, engineering and reliability and fleet projects.
During his time at United Airlines, Wiitala played a pivotal role in expanding the airline's operations, growing the fleet from fewer than 450 aircraft to 944. He also contributed significantly to the integration and growth of multi-fleet operations during the United-Continental merger.
Wiitala began his aviation career in 1988 as a project engineer at Aircraft Modular Products in Miami. He holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Iowa and has served on the board of Argonaut/Davis High School in Cleveland, which supports young people in pursuing pilot and technician certifications.
