Nordisk Aviation (Nordisk) has signed an agreement with Emirates to supply up to 10,000 advanced fire-resistant AKE containers for baggage and cargo. These containers are designed to reduce the risks posed by lithium-ion battery fires, providing enhanced safety during transport.
Nordisk's AKE containers stand out for their innovative design, being the lightest on the market while offering superior fire protection. In addition, they prioritise sustainability, with most components being 100% recyclable, contributing to a lower carbon footprint.
To validate their performance against lithium-ion battery fire risks, Nordisk collaborated with Emirates on extensive fire testing. While the standard aerospace regulation (SAE AS8992) focuses on Class A paper fires, Nordisk and Emirates implemented a more challenging testing scenario. The trial involved placing 1,000 18650 lithium-ion battery cells across 60 pieces of luggage, along with other flammable materials such as clothing, toiletries and alcohol bottles. The Nordisk AKE container successfully contained the fire for the entire six-hour test by allowing flue gases to escape while preventing oxygen inflow, demonstrating its advanced safety features.
Lithium-ion batteries, whether declared or undeclared, continue to pose significant risks in cargo and baggage transport. Nordisk Aviation's rigorous testing has helped identify key factors affecting fire intensity, ensuring its containers can effectively handle such incidents.
This agreement not only equips Emirates with cutting-edge fire protection technology but also fosters continued collaboration and innovation in aviation safety.
