Cathay Group (Cathay) has launched a new subsidiary, Cathay Technologies, as part of its broader digital transformation strategy. The new entity will focus on commercialising the airline's in-house digital innovations for the wider aviation industry, drawing on Cathay's nearly 80 years of experience to offer solutions that improve customer experience, operational efficiency, safety and sustainability.
At the heart of Cathay Technologies' offering is the Electronic Flight Folder (EFF), a digital tool developed internally to assist pilots in managing flight information more efficiently. Since its creation in 2019, the EFF has been implemented across Cathay Pacific, Cathay Cargo, HK Express, and Air Hong Kong. The tool has contributed to faster turnaround times and cost reductions through improved workflows. Its commercialisation represents a key milestone in Cathay's ambition to become a digital leader in aviation.
Lawrence Fong, Cathay's Director Digital and IT, highlighted the company's technological ambitions, stating: “Cathay's vision is to transform into a digital leader famous for our strong digital culture and capabilities, whilst keeping our people and customers at the heart of how we use technology.”
In addition to launching Cathay Technologies, the group has entered into a strategic partnership with the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP) through the Co-Acceleration Programme Fund. As one of four investing firms, Cathay is helping drive innovation and support the development of Hong Kong's digital economy.
Cathay Technologies will also build upon the airline's established innovation platforms, including the Cathay Hackathon and its graduate trainee programme, with the goal of strengthening the regional tech ecosystem and fostering the next generation of technology talent.
