American Airlines, in collaboration with AT&T, is poised to elevate the inflight experience by introducing complimentary Wi-Fi on over two million flights each year, beginning in January 2026. This benefit will be exclusively available to members of the AAdvantage® loyalty programme and will make American the leading domestic carrier for free inflight connectivity, with AT&T sponsoring the initiative.
Heather Garboden, Chief Customer Officer at American Airlines, explained the motivation behind the move: “Our customers greatly value staying connected while in the air, whether communicating with friends, getting work done, checking in on social media or streaming their favourite subscription services.” She noted the airline's long-term efforts to equip its aircraft with cutting-edge high-speed Wi-Fi, and expressed pride in being able to offer this service free of charge to their most loyal travellers.
From early 2026, American will provide this complimentary service on all aircraft fitted with Viasat and Intelsat satellite systems — covering approximately 90% of its mainline fleet. In preparation, the airline tested free Wi-Fi on selected routes to assess performance, with results exceeding expectations. Additionally, more than 500 regional aircraft are set to be upgraded with high-speed connectivity by the end of 2025, ensuring widespread access when the service launches.
This announcement follows Garboden's recent appointment as Chief Customer Officer, underlining American's renewed emphasis on enhancing the end-to-end passenger journey, including digital connectivity as a core part of the inflight experience.
