Bombardier Defense has confirmed a firm order from long-standing partner Saab for two Global 6500 aircraft, reinforcing the aircraft’s growing role in modern defence applications. The deal highlights the Global 6500’s suitability as a multi-mission platform for strategic government operations.
The Global 6500, part of Bombardier’s Global aircraft family, offers advanced performance with a top speed of Mach 0.90 and a range of 6,600 nautical miles (12,223 km). Its high-altitude capability, fuel efficiency, and steep approach certification allow it to operate from a wider range of locations compared to older platforms. These attributes make it a valuable choice for governments and defence agencies seeking agile and modern airborne solutions.
Eric Martel, Bombardier’s President and Chief Executive Officer, emphasised the aircraft’s capabilities: “Through Bombardier Defense, the Global 6500 aircraft is the go-to strategic asset for governments around the world looking to modernise and strengthen their defence capabilities.”
The aircraft will support Saab’s advanced defence programmes, although specific mission modifications were not detailed in the announcement. Bombardier Defense has built a reputation in special-mission aircraft, with over 500 in service and a combined fleet record exceeding three million flight hours.
In addition to manufacturing, Bombardier Defense offers a range of services including full design, build, test, and certification support, as well as tailored engineering and technical services to meet specialised operational requirements. Its aircraft are widely used in missions such as maritime patrol, search and rescue, humanitarian aid, and VIP transport.
