The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) has received its third upgraded Dornier Do228 aircraft from General Atomics AeroTec Systems (GA-ATS), marking a significant milestone in the ongoing fleet modernisation programme. This follows the delivery of the first two aircraft in 2023. The refurbishment project is part of a broader initiative supported by the US Department of Defense under the Indo-Pacific Maritime Security Initiative, aiming to enhance regional security and operational readiness.
The RTN’s fleet of seven Do228 aircraft is undergoing comprehensive upgrades to meet the evolving demands of maritime surveillance and coastal defence. The modernisation includes a complete structural overhaul, addressing necessary repairs and replacing key components. Central to the upgrade is the installation of a state-of-the-art “New Generation” glass cockpit. This advanced digital interface replaces older analogue systems and is designed to improve situational awareness and ease of use for pilots. It is a feature that has already proven successful in newer Do228 NXT aircraft.
The enhancements extend to the mission systems onboard. The upgraded aircraft are now equipped with advanced surveillance equipment, including an all-round radar, electro-optical infrared cameras, a data link system, and an automatic identification system for maritime vessel recognition. The cabin has also been reconfigured to include ergonomic mission consoles and specially designed operator seats, improving comfort and operational efficiency during extended missions.
The Do228 remains a versatile platform; its cabin can be rapidly reconfigured to accommodate cargo or medical evacuation operations, offering flexibility beyond coastal surveillance. Following successful ground and flight testing, the third modernised aircraft was ferried to Thailand and formally handed over to the RTN. This delivery underscores GA-ATS’s ongoing commitment to the RTN and highlights the strategic partnership between Thailand and the United States in regional maritime security. The fourth aircraft is already undergoing maintenance at GA-ATS facilities, ensuring continued progress in the fleet upgrade.
