Cathay Pacific has announced an order for an additional 14 Boeing 777-9 passenger aircraft, increasing its total commitment to 35 of the advanced twin-engine jets. The move reflects the Hong Kong-based carrier’s ongoing efforts to modernise its long-haul fleet and reinforce its global network presence.
The carrier has committed to purchasing GE9X engines to power the additional Boeing 777-9 aircraft, bringing the airline’s total commitment to 35 GE9X powered 777-9s.
The Boeing 777-9 is designed to deliver significant environmental and operational benefits. Compared to the aircraft it replaces, the 777-9 offers a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and emissions on average, as well as a 40% decrease in noise. These improvements align with Cathay Pacific’s ambition to operate more sustainably while enhancing efficiency across long- and ultra long-haul services.
“We plan to expand and renew our fleet with the additional 777-9 aircraft, enabling us to continue our rich history of connecting the world with our Hong Kong hub,” said Ronald Lam, Cathay Group Chief Executive Officer. “Cathay Pacific aims to further strengthen our ongoing partnership with Boeing and leverage the world-class features of the new 777-9 as we strive to become the world’s best premium airline.”
Cathay Pacific has been operating Boeing 777 aircraft for over three decades and has used them to build a strong global footprint. The airline sees the new planes as an ideal platform to support the next phase of its development, offering both passenger and cargo capacity enhancements while helping to reduce operating costs.
