Pilot union VNV and KLM have reached a comprehensive preliminary agreement that will enable the airline to adequately staff pilot positions, increase revenue, and strengthen its financial position. It is expected that more than 10,000 additional flights can be operated as a result, allowing millions of extra passengers to reach their destinations.
As part of the agreement, pilots will work one additional day per month during the summer season of 2026. In addition, KLM will be permitted to schedule pilots to work one extra day per quarter during their weekends. These measures will help KLM maintain its operational capacity during peak periods.
With this agreement, pilots are investing in KLM’s future, which is positive news for all employees of the company. Revenue is expected to receive a significant boost in the coming years, enabling the airline to make progress towards sustainable and solid operational performance.
The agreement ensures that KLM will be able to quickly staff pilot positions again, thanks in part to specific arrangements regarding training. KLM will now be allowed to schedule mandatory simulator training and exams during pilots’ weekends, creating the flexibility to respond swiftly to changes in market demand.
Temporary measures have also been introduced to bridge the gap until all positions are filled. These include the additional working day per month during the summer of 2026, as well as special arrangements regarding pilots’ vacation days for that period. The outcome is expected to be more than 10,000 additional flights.
In return for their contribution, pilots will receive appropriate compensation. For example, the existing scheme that allows pilots to travel at a discount once per year will be made permanent.
The agreement also makes it possible for KLM to efficiently introduce the Airbus A350. This quiet and fuel-efficient aircraft will be deployed promptly upon delivery. As part of the agreement, extended beds will be installed in the pilot rest area, specially designed for tall Dutch crew members, enabling the A350 to be used on the longest routes in KLM’s network.
