Spirit Airlines has confirmed that John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning, will retire at the end of this month. His decision closes a career that has lasted more than four decades in aviation.
The airline expressed deep gratitude for his work. Rana Ghosh, Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, praised Kirby’s leadership and partnership. He said Kirby played a pivotal role in shaping Spirit’s network. In addition, he highlighted that the airline is already working on selecting a successor to ensure a smooth handover.
Kirby has spent over 40 years managing network strategies, fleet planning and schedules at several major U.S. airlines. These include Alaska Airlines, Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways. He has been widely recognised for innovation and strong industry relationships.
In 2018, he joined Spirit Airlines during a period of rapid expansion. Over more than six years at Spirit, he grew the airline’s network significantly. In particular, he strengthened Spirit’s position at Fort Lauderdale (FLL), its hometown airport. Under his leadership, the airline became the dominant carrier there.
Kirby also influenced Spirit’s long-term fleet and schedule planning. His contribution has been seen as essential in balancing growth with operational needs. His retirement will mark the end of a key chapter for the carrier.
Reflecting on his career, Kirby described the aviation industry as “magical.” He explained that exploring the world and connecting people was deeply rewarding. However, he emphasised that the people he worked with made the journey meaningful. He expressed gratitude to colleagues and looked forward to the industry’s future.
In short, John Kirby’s departure leaves behind a lasting legacy of network growth, innovation and strong leadership. Spirit Airlines now faces the task of appointing a new leader to continue this progress.
