Avation has announced the signing of a lease agreement with South Korean airline SUM Air for the delivery of a new ATR 72-600 aircraft.
The aircraft is part of Avation’s firm order for ten ATR 72-600s placed in 2024 under its long-term purchase contract with manufacturer ATR. Scheduled for delivery in November 2025, the aircraft will become the first in SUM Air’s fleet, marking an important step in the airline’s entry into the South Korean aviation market.
The ATR 72-600 has long been regarded as the benchmark turboprop for regional connectivity, offering operators a balance of fuel efficiency, passenger comfort and cost-effectiveness. With its ability to operate on shorter runways and across a wide range of environments, the aircraft is particularly well-suited to South Korea, where airlines are increasingly looking to expand services between the mainland and the country’s numerous islands.
The deal highlights Avation’s strategy of supporting regional airlines with aircraft that meet both operational and environmental goals. The ATR 72-600 is recognised for having one of the lowest carbon emissions per seat kilometre among regional aircraft, making it a strong choice for operators seeking to improve sustainability credentials while maintaining efficiency.
Jeff Chatfield, Executive Chairman of Avation PLC, commented: “We are pleased to confirm the addition of SUM Air to our customer list and congratulate them on their decision to select the ATR 72-600 to expand regional air travel throughout the Republic of Korea, connecting cities and islands in the region. By choosing the industry-leading low carbon footprint ATR 72 aircraft, we are investing in sustainable aviation and contributing to much needed connectivity in South Korea.”
