Norwegian has expanded its long-term fleet plan by exercising an option to purchase 30 additional Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, bringing its total firm order to 80. As part of the agreement, Norwegian and Boeing have also revised delivery dates, with the final aircraft now expected to arrive in 2031.
The move follows the company’s May 2022 announcement of a deal for 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, alongside an option for a further 30. By firming up the option, Norwegian is reinforcing its fleet strategy and signalling confidence in its growth trajectory for the coming decade.
The revised delivery schedule is designed to ensure a smooth and efficient renewal of Norwegian’s fleet, carefully timed with lease expiries and shifting market conditions. This approach gives the airline both flexibility and stability as it aligns capacity with demand.
Chief Executive Geir Karlsen described the order as a “milestone” for the airline. He emphasised that the deal was secured on favourable terms, providing Norwegian with both growth opportunities and flexibility. “By exercising the option and adjusting the delivery profile, we maintain flexibility while reinforcing our commitment to operating one of the most modern and fuel-efficient fleets in Europe. These aircraft will not only lower emissions but also provide our customers with an even better travel experience,” Karlsen said.
The expanded order also reflects Norwegian’s enduring partnership with Boeing, underlining its commitment to long-term fleet investment while balancing sustainability, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
