Lincoln Airport has launched a major reconstruction of its 12,901-foot runway 18/36, a project valued at around US$100 million and one of the largest infrastructure investments in the airport’s history. The multi-year programme will modernise one of the longest runways in the United States, strengthening its role in commercial aviation, military operations, general aviation and emergency response missions.
Funded through a partnership involving federal, state and local agencies, the project brings together the Lincoln Airport Authority, Nebraska Air National Guard, Federal Aviation Administration, Nebraska Department of Transportation and other stakeholders.
Originally built for military operations at the former Lincoln Air Force Base, Runway 18/36 remains a vital national defence and transportation asset. Its length enables it to accommodate some of the world’s largest military and civilian aircraft. The upgrade will improve safety, reliability and operational performance while supporting the long-standing partnership between the airport and the Nebraska Air National Guard’s 155th Air Refuelling Wing.
Once completed, the reconstructed runway will help maintain Lincoln Airport’s position as a leading joint-use aviation facility, supporting economic growth, air connectivity and national security for decades to come.
