SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC) and Air India have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore opportunities to expand their maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) partnership and support India’s ambition to become a global aviation MRO hub.
The MoU builds on the companies’ existing collaboration, including a 12-year Inventory Technical Management agreement signed in February 2024 to provide component support for Air India’s Airbus A320 family fleet, and SIAEC’s appointment in May 2024 as Air India’s strategic base maintenance partner for the development of maintenance facilities in Bengaluru.
Under the new agreement, the companies will assess opportunities to combine SIAEC’s MRO expertise with Air India’s operational network to develop a world-class MRO ecosystem in India. The collaboration could also lead to the creation of a joint venture to serve the growing maintenance requirements of the Indian and wider regional aviation markets.
SIAEC Chief Executive Officer Chin Yau Seng said the MoU marked an important step in the companies’ expanding relationship and would allow both partners to explore opportunities to strengthen Air India’s operational capabilities while supporting customers across India and the region. He added that the initiative reflected the country’s significant potential to become a leading global MRO centre.
