MSC Air Cargo has placed its first order for Boeing’s 777-8 Freighter, committing to five aircraft as the carrier expands its long-haul cargo fleet.

The previously unidentified order makes MSC Air Cargo the third Europe-based cargo airline to select the new freighter, which Boeing says offers the highest payload and the lowest fuel consumption, emissions and operating costs per tonne in its class.

Chief executive Jannie Davel said the investment supports the airline’s long-term growth strategy, providing greater efficiency, range and capacity while advancing its sustainability goals.

The 777-8 Freighter incorporates technologies from Boeing’s 777X family and features from the current-generation 777 Freighter. Boeing has now secured more than 80 orders for the aircraft as demand for air cargo capacity continues to grow, driven in part by the expansion of e-commerce.
