Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA) has ordered an Airbus H160, marking the agency’s first acquisition of the next-generation helicopter.

The aircraft will be based in Kumamoto prefecture on Kyushu and join the FDMA’s existing helicopter fleet, strengthening Japan’s nationwide emergency response capability.

The H160 will be used primarily for rapid aerial reconnaissance and real-time visual intelligence gathering during major natural disasters, including a potential large-scale Nankai Trough earthquake.

The helicopter will be equipped with Helisat advanced satellite technology, enabling high-definition data to be transmitted directly via satellite and bypass damaged ground infrastructure. The system is designed to give emergency commanders continuous, real-time visibility of affected areas during critical response operations.

Airbus is also developing dedicated snow landing gear for the H160 to support safe and stable operations in Japan’s heavy-snow regions and demanding winter conditions.
