International Airlines Group (IAG) has selected OpenAirlines’ SkyBreathe fuel-efficiency platform for use across its five airlines, covering more than 600 aircraft, the companies said.
The platform, which analyses operational data to identify ways to reduce fuel consumption, is being deployed at Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, LEVEL and Vueling as airlines face continued pressure from volatile fuel prices.
SkyBreathe analyses data including flight plans, weather conditions and aircraft performance to identify potential fuel-saving opportunities while maintaining safety standards.
IAG’s airlines already use measures such as flight-plan optimisation, reducing auxiliary power unit use on the ground and single-engine taxiing where operationally appropriate.
The deployment will introduce a common data and reporting framework across the group, allowing the airlines to measure fuel-efficiency performance more consistently and share initiatives.
“Fuel is one of the largest costs for our airlines, and ongoing fuel price volatility has reinforced the importance of improving efficiency wherever we can,” IAG Chief Financial and Sustainability Officer José Antonio Barrionuevo said.
SkyBreathe is already in use at Aer Lingus, Iberia, LEVEL and Vueling, with British Airways expected to complete its rollout in the coming months.
