Failed coup sees Turkish Airlines flights to US halted

Though the ban can be lifted at any time, the Federal Aviation Association (FAA) in the US has stopped all flights from Turkish Airlines to the USA, which affects thrice daily flights from Istanbul to New York JFK, Istanbul to Los Angeles and daily flights to Atlanta, Boston, Chicago O’Hare, Houston Intercontinental, Miami, San Francisco and Washington Dulles airports.
Turkish Airlines CEO, Temel Kotil, is quoted as saying that all flights to and from all other airports and countries have recommenced, “except to the US, but this is not under my control,” adding that he hoped Turkish Airlines flights to the US would resume as soon as possible. The FAA issued a NOTAM (notice to airmen) on July 16 placing a ban on US airlines flying in Turkish airspace, though this does not affect any airlines as no US airline flies to Turkey, but the ban also includes private flights to Turkey. However, the NOTAM also stated that “no person operating an aircraft, regardless of registry, may depart Turkey to any United States airport.”
The ban has immediate effect and will last until August 31, though there is provision for the situation to be reviewed on August 15. It should be noted that the ban does not exclude outbound and inbound passengers from flying to and from Turkey by means of connecting flight, the ban only relates to direct flights, as there are a number of non-US non-Turkish airlines which offer flights to Turkey with a connection via a major hub.
