Safran Electronics & Defense is expanding its U.S. manufacturing capabilities to produce small satellite propulsion systems, addressing increasing demand in both commercial and defence sectors. Announced at the 2024 Small Satellite Conference in Logan, Utah, this initiative aims to support the North American small satellite market’s projected growth, expected to exceed US$5 billion by 2030.

The “Made-in-the-USA” EPS®X00 system, to be produced by Safran’s US-based subsidiary, will have its first delivery in Q1 2026. A new production facility in Colorado will enhance Safran’s role as a provider of satellite propulsion solutions, while also hosting its U.S. satellite communications and space & ground domain awareness teams. This expansion underscores Safran’s commitment to investing in the U.S. and supporting both commercial and government customers.

Safran’s electric propulsion system, EPS®X00, featuring the PPS®X00 thruster, offers a high specific impulse and up to 5,000 hours of thrust time, making it suitable for various Low Earth Orbit (LEO) applications. This move will also help meet sustainability and resilience regulations by enhancing spacecraft manoeuvrability and facilitating the deorbiting of LEO satellites at the end of their service life.
