Spanish flag carrier Iberia has officially taken delivery of its first Airbus A321XLR aircraft, marking the airline as the launch operator of this advanced single-aisle jet. This aircraft, equipped with CFM LEAP-1A engines, will enhance Iberia’s operations by allowing for both regional flights throughout Europe and its inaugural transatlantic service from Madrid to Boston later this November.

The newly delivered A321XLR features a two-class layout with 182 seats, including lie-flat business-class seats that provide direct aisle access. The aircraft is designed with the new Airspace cabin, which promises long-haul comfort across all classes. Additionally, the aircraft is equipped with XL overhead bins, offering 60% more luggage capacity, contributing to a smoother boarding process for both passengers and crew. In-seat connectivity and an advanced lighting system further enhance the overall passenger experience.

The A321XLR is a significant evolution of the A320neo family, specifically designed to meet market demands for greater range and payload capacity. With an impressive range of up to 4,700 nautical miles, the A321XLR offers 15% more range than its predecessor, the A321LR, while also achieving a 30% reduction in fuel burn per seat compared to previous-generation aircraft. Additionally, it boasts lower NOx emissions and reduced noise levels. Airbus has already received over 500 orders for this innovative aircraft.

The A321XLR conducted its maiden flight in June 2022, followed by an extensive testing programme involving three aircraft. Notably, this new model is capable of operating on up to 50% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with Airbus aiming for 100% SAF capability by 2030. This commitment underscores the industry’s push towards more sustainable aviation solutions while providing Iberia with the tools needed to enhance its fleet and service offerings.
