The WestJet Group has reached a significant achievement with the official completion of its integration of Sunwing Airlines. This marks the culmination of two years of meticulous planning, coordination and collaboration, aimed at enhancing connectivity and delivering greater value to Canadian travellers.
Alexis von Hoensbroech, CEO of the WestJet Group, described the achievement as a complex but transformative journey: “Completing two airline consolidations in just two years—the first with Swoop in 2024 and now Sunwing—was complex and required coordination across every aspect of our business… it’s also a story of transformation in Canadian aviation.”
WestJet acquired Sunwing in May 2023, bringing together two leading Canadian travel brands. The integration, finalised on May 29, 2025, aligns with WestJet’s strategy to dominate the sun and leisure travel market in Canada by offering more affordable, accessible travel options. It also strengthens the broader travel and tourism industry at a pivotal time.
As part of the integration, WestJet now operates all of its aircraft under a single Air Operator Certificate (AOC). This includes 16 aircraft formerly operated by Swoop, nine from the now-defunct Lynx Air, and 18 previously belonging to Sunwing Airlines. A comprehensive reconfiguration of these aircraft to match WestJet’s standard cabin layout is underway, with completion expected by the end of 2025.
The unified narrow-body fleet of 150 Boeing 737 aircraft will offer a consistent inflight experience and a broader range of seat options—Premium, Economy, Extended Comfort, and UltraBasic—allowing passengers to tailor their travel based on comfort and cost preferences. This approach reflects WestJet’s commitment to meeting the evolving expectations of Canadian travellers, combining flexibility with network reliability.
