Smarter skies through shared turbulence data

With “IATA Turbulence Aware”, Lufthansa will collect anonymised turbulence data from flights operated by participating airlines. This real-time information provides pilots with precise insights into current atmospheric conditions. Through its involvement in IATA Turbulence Aware, Lufthansa is making a significant contribution to enhancing the quality and availability of turbulence data for airlines worldwide. Lufthansa Group carriers Swiss International Air Lines and Edelweiss Air are also participating in the programme.

IATA Turbulence Aware is built on the principle of swarm intelligence in the skies. Thousands of aircraft across the globe are equipped with sensors that continuously measure turbulence intensity and transmit anonymised data to a central database. Pilots can access this information directly via the navigation display in the cockpit. Colour-coded symbols indicate the location, altitude, timing and severity of recorded turbulence. This real-time data complements conventional weather forecasts and enables more accurate and efficient flight planning.
