Bombardier said on Tuesday, September 10, that its Global 8000 business jet has received approval from the U.K. Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to operate at London City Airport, giving customers direct access to one of the world’s major financial centres.

The approval takes effect immediately and allows the ultra-long-range aircraft to connect London City with destinations including Singapore, Los Angeles, Honolulu and Buenos Aires.

“U.K. CAA approval to access London City Airport ensures customers can save precious time when accessing one of the world’s most important finance hubs,” said Stephen McCullough, Bombardier’s executive vice president for engineering, product development and Bombardier Defense.

London City Airport is among the most challenging airports for business jets, with a steep approach required under noise-abatement rules and a short runway. Bombardier said the Global 8000’s wing design, including leading-edge slats, and its braking systems were key to meeting the airport’s demanding performance requirements.

The approval gives Global 8000 customers an alternative to airports such as Farnborough and Luton, which are commonly used by larger business aircraft serving London.

Bombardier said passengers using London City Airport could cut ground transfer times by as much as 60 to 90 minutes, potentially improving productivity for travellers heading to central London.
