Lufthansa Group has approved the purchase of 20 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft as the German airline group accelerates the renewal of its short- and medium-haul fleet, it said on Thursday, September 17.
Lufthansa’s supervisory board approved the exercise of options secured under a 2023 order for 40 Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets. That deal included 60 purchase options for additional aircraft from Boeing’s 737 MAX family.
Deliveries of the 20 newly ordered MAX 10s are scheduled to begin in the early 2030s, Lufthansa said. The aircraft will gradually replace older Airbus A320-family jets across the group.
The MAX 10, the largest aircraft in Boeing’s 737 MAX family, offers greater seating capacity than the MAX 8 and is expected to improve operating efficiency on European routes, Lufthansa said.
The airline said the new aircraft will consume about 30% less fuel than the aircraft they are intended to replace, while their higher seating capacity is expected to cut unit costs by around 20%.
Lufthansa Group expects to receive more than 250 new aircraft by 2035 as part of its broader fleet modernisation programme, continuing its investment in newer and more fuel-efficient aircraft.
