With the release of the report indicating a faulty connection in the A320’s Rudder Travel Limiter Unit (RTLU) as the reason for the crash of AirAsia flight QZ8501 in December 2014, which killed all 162 passengers and crew, the Indonesian Transport ministry has reacted positively by ordering the inspection of the RTLUs of all A320’s flown by national airlines, including AirAsia, Lion Air, Garuda, Citilink and Batik Air.
Ministry spokesperson Muhamad Alwi confirmed that “We will check the technical documents, the operation documents and the aircraft itself,” while the Ministry has provided 18 inspectors to perform the audit which will cover a minimum of 75 aircraft. The Ministry has also confirmed that it will allow aircraft operators to carry on as normal until June 2016, by which time it hopes to have concluded the audits.
In the meantime, should any aircraft MRO logs reveal signs of “repetitive trouble” similar to that discovered with flight QZ8501 and which was responsible for producing repeated warning signals, that aircraft would be grounded the Ministry made clear.
Indonesia’s aviation industry and its official oversight was described only a short time ago by Ignatius Jonan, Transport Minister, as having “failed to meet the standards of transport safety. A number of aviation accidents occurred in Indonesia during 2015; not a few of those accidents were fatal.”
