WestJet will lease smaller aircraft for the period of September 2 to 30, 2008, in order to continue to serve the people of Prince George while the main runway at the Prince George Airport is being extended. During construction, the main runway will be shortened to the point where WestJet is unable to land its signature fleet of Boeing Next-Generation 737s. Faced with the decision to discontinue service, WestJet chose to lease smaller Dash-8 aircraft from Hawkair Aviation of Terrace, B.C., on a temporary basis in order to maintain service to Prince George.
