In May Finnair’s traffic declined by 11% from the previous year. Scheduled traffic in May was 9.8% lower than in 2008. Asian traffic
declined by 10.8% and North American traffic by 7.0%. European traffic was 8.0% and domestic traffic 13.9% lower. In Cargo the fall in demand was sharper than in recent months and in May cargo volume declined by 28%.
Due to the fall in demand, Finnair has cut its capacity significantly in all types of traffic. Capacity has been cut in domestic traffic by more than a quarter, in leisure traffic by a fifth and in Asian traffic by more than 17%. Owing to the capacity cuts, passenger load factors improved from last year, but are still below the long-term average.
