There are currently 156 foreign airlines operating in China and it has now been announced by the country’s aviation authority that each and every one will have to pass a stringent set of safety criteria in order to continue operating there. The Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC) has indicated that airlines will be evaluated on a 12 point scale based on 35 independent criteria, including compliance with rules and regulations, the number of safety-related complaints by customers, and number of accidents. Points will be deducted for safety violations and accidents. According to the CAAC, if a low score is attained on the 12 point scale airlines will be prohibited from operating in China, indicating that similar rules are already in place in both the EU and the USA. Currently over 300 international airlines are banned from operating in Europe.
