The formation of American Airlines Group through the merger of American Airlines with US Airways will see the disappearance of the US Airways brand on the 17th October. The merger, which will see the creation of the world’s largest airline when completed, aims to learn lessons from problems created when United Continental Holdings was created through a merger and their efforts to flip reservations to one brand overnight, a move which caused considerable delays.
American Airlines are adopting a far more cautious approach and virtually sparing no expense as the final parts of the merger fall into place. It has canceled flights around the 17th October to make the transition, while hiring approximately 1,300 full- and part-time reservation agents as well as 600 airport agents. These will cover for US Airways employees while they are trained on new systems.
American Airlines Group Inc. have confirmed it will have a single website, reservations system and brand which will come into effect on October 17th. The last two US Airways flights are scheduled to depart 9:55 p.m. local time on Oct. 16th from San Francisco to Philadelphia and from Phoenix to Denver.
Any US Airways flights which have been scheduled for beyond October 16th will over time receive American-only flight codes starting on July 18th. Any travelers already booked and ticketed on one of those flights will get an email within the next few weeks with revised reservation information, the airline has confirmed. The change does not just involve switching flight codes, thousands of customer reservations must be transferred from US Airways’ old platform to the new one now being used by American Airlines.
According to American Airlines’ Chief Integration Officer Maya Leibman, “We have not spared any expense in order to ensure we have the quality we need for something like this.”
