The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has stated that after an initial investigation of the left GE 90 engine casing of the British Airways Boeing 777-200ER which caught fire during an aborted take-off is showing multiple breaches “in the area around the high pressure compressor.” In addition they said that investigators had recovered “several pieces of the high pressure compressor spool (approximately 7-8 inches in length)” which were found on the Las Vegas McCarren International Airport runway after the fire on Sept. 8.
Boeing and GE Aviation are party to NTSB’s investigation of the fire, while NTSB have made it clear that the aircraft’s left engine and pylon, along with its left fuselage structure and inboard left wing “were substantially damaged by the fire.” They have indicated they are planning a “full teardown” of the GE90 engine.
Thanks to the swift action of the aircraft’s captain and 12 crew all 157 passengers on board were safely evacuated under emergency conditions after escape chutes were deployed. NTSB confirmed that there were “several minor injuries” during the evacuation, though these were described as “mostly abrasions.”
The 777’s flight data and cockpit voice recorders are being downloaded and will be examined by NTSB. However there is little doubt that the 777 has a very good safety record, despite the disappearance of flight MH370, and there is no existing evidence to indicate why the plane disappeared off the radar. Over 1000 of the long-range, wide-body 777 planes have been delivered by Boeing to airlines across the world since 1995 and according to the US National Transportation Safety Board there have been fewer than 60 safety incidents reported.
