Six weeks after EgyptAir flight 804 crashed into the Mediterranean Sea while en route between Paris and Cairo, examination of the flight data recorder has revealed the possible presence of lavatory and avionics smoke prior to the plane’s crash, according the Egyptian civil aviation ministry. In addition to this, the Airbus 320’s front section, which has been located, is showing “signs of high temperature damage and soot.”
According to the ministry, the data examined was consistent with information from the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System, or ACARS (responsible for sending messages between planes and ground facilities) indicating “lavatory smoke and avionics smoke,” adding “Analysis will be carried out to try to identify the source and reason for those signs.”
According to Richard Quest, aviation analyst for CNN, “We now know that there was some form of either smoldering or some form of fire or some form of combustion, if you like, on that plane, and that has been verified,” while also saying, “We will know whether this was a bomb or whether it was a fire.”
To date, while an act of terrorism as opposed to a technical fault has been suspected from the very beginning, no political or religious group has stepped forward and claimed responsibility for the downing of the plane which led to the loss of all 66 passengers and crew on board.
