Opened in May 2010, Gelendzhik Airport is the first new airport which has been built in Russia since the Soviet era. Currently handling 140 passengers an hour, a new 5,200 m² single-storey terminal is to be opened in 2018, a year after originally planned, which will be capable of handling up to 314 passengers per hour.
Russian airport operator Basel Aero has signed an agreement with the Gelendzhik and the surrounding Krasnodar region authorities to construct the terminal, plans for which have passed the critical design review phase. It is estimated the airport will attract up to 860,000 passengers in 10 years, while it has been calculated that the investment of 520m rubles (US$8.20m) will be recouped over an eight-to-ten-year period “with moderate forecast of airport traffic dynamics and conservative scenario of development of the Russian economy.”
The operators, Basel Aero, also operate three other airports in southern Russia – Anapi, Sochi and Krsasnodar, while they are also the current operators at Gelendzhik.
