It has been announced that Mexico’s IAMSA Group has bought out Irelandia Aviation’s stake in VivaAerobús, understood to be a 50% holding, to become the sole owner of the Mexican low-cost carrier. The airline was established in 2006 in a joint venture between the Ryan family, the founders of the Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair, and the Mexican bus company, IAMSA. Currently the airline operates 19 Airbus A320-200s and two A320neo’s, with a further 38 A320neo’s on order. VivaAerobús has hubs at Mexico City International Airport, Monterrey International Airport, Guadalajara International Airport and Cancún International Airport. While covering the majority of Mexico with domestic routes, the carrier also flies to seven U.S. Destinations, including Miami, Chicago, Houston and Las Vegas.
Part of the deal includes IAMSA selling its 25% stake in VivaColombia to Irelandia Aviation. VivaColombia is the Colombian low-cost carrier headquartered in Medellín and is already partly owned by Irelandia which holds a 25% stake in the airline. VivaColombia operates a fleet of ten Airbus A320-200s with three currently on order and aside from servicing 12 national destinations, the carrier also flies to Ecuador, Panama, Peru and the United States.
