As of January 3, Stockholm's Arlanda Airport has fuel bunkers filled with an approximate 10% biofuel converted from used cooking oil, which has been mixed with standard jet kerosene. An SAS Scandinavian Airlines Airbus A320neo was the first aircraft to use the new fuel for its flight to Los Angeles that day. This means that Arlanda joins Oslo Gardermoen airport with its environmentally friendly biofuel, which is also available at Stockholm Bromma Airport and Åre Östersund Airport.
Sweden's state-owned Swedavia owns and operates 10 airports throughout the country and, through the Fly Green Fund, it bought its initial batch of the fuel which is produced in Los Angeles. The Fly Green Fund has been set up to encourage the use of biofuel in the Nordic nations, with KLM and Braathens Regional Airlines opting to use the new biofuel at Arlanda.
According to Scandinavian Airlines' head of media relations, Fredrik Henriksson, this has been “a symbolic and important step”, despite the small amounts presently involved. Henriksson also indicated that while the current high price of the biofuel was prohibitive, the greater the number of carriers who opt to use it, the sooner the price will be driven down to a more economically beneficial level.
Businesses in Sweden are encouraged to offset the environmental flight costs by investing in the Fly Green Fund, which subsequently buys biofuel. A percentage of the money invested in the fund will ultimately be used to create biofuel production facilities in the Nordic region.
