Northeast U.S. storms see 400,000 travelers’ flights canceled

A late winter storm has caused havoc in New York City and other areas of the Northeast U.S. with strong winds and sleet battering airports. The National Weather Service (NWS) warned of winds between 25mph and 35mph, with gusts reaching up to 55mph.
As of 7.30 ET, FlightAware had released information that 7,746 flights had been canceled, which would affect over 400,000 travelers.
Flights within, into or out of the United States on Tuesday saw 1,336 delays and another 6,046 cancellations as of 2:08 p.m., ET, according to FlightAware’s live tracking tool. Another 839 flights for Wednesday have been canceled. On Monday, U.S. flights saw 3,752 delays and 1,658 cancellations.
As of 10:30 a.m., ET, 1,124 of the typical 1,150 daily flights at LaGuardia Airport have been canceled, while 772 of the average 1,200 daily flights from John. F. Kennedy International Airport have been canceled. Airlines have canceled 1,015 of the normal 1,200 daily flights from Newark Liberty International Airport.
American Airlines canceled all flights into New York’s three airports — Newark, LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International Airport — and JetBlue Airways reported extensive cancellations.
Delta Air Lines canceled 800 flights for Tuesday for New York, Boston and other northeast airports. United Airlines said it would have no operations at Newark or LaGuardia.
“We’re keeping a close eye on things and depending on how things go, will plan to ramp back up Wednesday morning,” United said in a statement.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel was due to meet President Donald Trump in Washington today (Tuesday) but this meeting has been postponed until Friday, according to the White House.
