Hurricane Harvey responsible for cancellation of over 3,000 flights

One of the worst hurricanes to hit the United States since Katrina 12 years ago, has led to the cancellation of over 3,000 flights in the United States, predominantly involving flights to and from airports in southeast Texas. Cancellations began on Friday and have continued through to today (Monday).
Houston saw both William P. Hobby and George Bush Intercontinental airports completely closed as a result not just of high winds, but also the level of rain, despite Harvey being downgraded to a tropical storm.
Last Saturday United Airlines cancelled all flights from Houston, one of its busiest hubs, while approximately 30 percent of incoming flights to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and San Antonio Airport were cancelled.
So far Hurricane Harvey has been responsible for the death of two people, while leaving over 300,000 without power as it makes its way across Texas. Officials have indicated they expect “catastrophic and life-threatening flooding”. The National Hurricane Center has estimated that up to 35 inches of rain could fall and people in the heaviest-hit areas are being advised to climb on their rooves for safety.
The level of cancellations not only affected domestic flights as many passengers were stranded abroad, their flights to the U.S. having been cancelled.
